Dry Stone Walling Workshop in Norway

Every baker knows it takes good ingredients to make a tasty pie. Now that plans for the dry stone workshop at Tutagrø, Norway have come together, I can see that our week in July is going to be a fantastic time. We have a beautiful setting, excellent accommodations and an abundance of building stone. All that’s missing are a few more enthusiastic folks to sign up and meet us at Tutagrø. I hope you will be the one who completes the pie!

Limited spaces available. For information about the workshop, please email Dan at companyofstone@gmail.com, or leave a comment below. For questions about travel, meals, accommodations and general information about the area, please consult the Turtagø Hotel website at http://www.turtagro.no or email Etti Salomonsen, Daglig leder/ Manager at etti@turtagro.no.

FIRELIGHT DRY STONE WALL WORKSHOP AT TURTAGRØ This 5-Day hands-on course in dry stone construction will teach basic building skills that can be applied to both traditional walls and environmental art making. A permanent installation will be constructed on the grounds of Turtagrø Hotel for guests to use for outdoor cooking and social gathering. When completed, a central wall will function as the fireback for three separate fires. Two raised platforms will provide space for cooking on a grill or hibachi. The ground-level firebed will be ringed by a curved stone bench. The “Firelight Wall” workshop project will offer participants the hands-on opportunity to design and site a structure while learning and practicing dry stone walling. The spectacular glacial landscape of Norway offers an exceptional variety of scenery ranging from blue glacier arms and towering mountains to fertile valleys and deep lakes. If time allows, one workshop day will be devoted to exploring the natural surroundings and creating a temporary environmental art piece. Meal offerings in the hotel restaurant are hearty, delicious and locally sourced. During informal evening gatherings in the meeting room there will be short programs offered on the subjects of traditional walling and environmental art.

WORKSHOP GOALS:

  • To gain proficiency in managing a stockpile of stone and a building site, to appreciate the value of clear and stable building guide devices, to employ safe and practical means for shifting and lifting stone, and to learn to apply the four strengthening principles to each stone placed in a construction; end in/ end out, tail down, cover a crack, and match a height.

  • To gain familiarity with a landscape and become engaged with it by exploring and interpreting its features through environmental art making.

  • To enjoy a truly unique outdoor experience with stone enthusiasts from around the globe.
