An Old Friend Revisited
Having gone to college in NYC I have fond memories of walking and bicycling across the Brooklyn Bridge. A smaller version of that famous suspension bridge was designed by the same engineer for crossing the Ohio River at Cincinnatti. The John A. Roebling Bridge, named for its creator, was built in 1867. The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, was initially designed by John Roebling but completed by his son, Washington, and his wife Emily. While visiting Cincinnati recently I walked the pedestrian path across the bridge. It was a wonderfully peaceful stroll because the auto traffic lanes were closed due to ongoing restoration work. The Cincinnati bridge felt like an old friend revisited, only, more diminutive and rusticated than the grand and graceful Brooklyn Bridge.
